How to gift a car to someone (without being in the photo)

Dealer orders, titles, insurance and delivery — the quiet way.

By Hesbon Osoro··2 min read

Giving a car is one of the few gifts that is both enormous and simple — provided you let the right people handle it. The giant bow is optional. The paperwork is not.

1. Lock the exact spec

Model, trim, paint code, interior, packages and wheels. A precise spec means your dealer can place a factory order without calling anyone — which is exactly how surprises stay surprises. Every car on the catalog already has one.

2. Choose how the title is handled

  • Order in the recipient's name — cleanest for the recipient, but they (or their agent) will need to provide details for registration.
  • Buy, then transfer as a gift — common, but registration, gift paperwork and any taxes differ by country and state.
  • Through an intermediary — a dealership or agent coordinates both sides so the giver stays unnamed.

3. Don't forget the running costs

Insurance, servicing, tyres and — for cross-border deliveries — import duties. The most considerate givers cover the first year. It's the difference between 'what a gift' and 'what a bill'.

4. Arrange a discreet delivery

A pickup at the dealer or a bonded port, with registration handled by an agent, keeps your name out of it entirely.
