Your principal wants to give something away. Here's the family-office playbook.
From 'do something nice' to delivered, in six quiet steps.
It usually starts with five words over dinner: 'Let's do something nice for…' By the morning it's your job. Here is how the best offices turn a warm impulse into a clean, discreet, completed gift.
- Brief. Pin down the object, the recipient, the budget envelope, the anonymity level and the deadline. If the object isn't exact, get it exact.
- Diligence. Verify the recipient's counsel or contact, the asset's title or spec, and any conflicts. For property: searches. For vehicles: allocation and delivery windows.
- Structure. Decide the route — counsel-to-counsel, escrow, intermediary — and whether it's a gift outright or through an entity. Tax counsel signs off here.
- Execution. Dealer orders, conveyancing, share transfers. The principal should never need to make a call.
- Discretion. Agree up front what the recipient may say, and to whom. Default to nothing.
- Documentation. File the gift record, the transfer documents and any filings. Future-you will be grateful.
